ZAN NEN

I went to TOEFL test yesterday, however the result was bad.
I'm so sorry despite many people encouraged me.
I couldn't responded your expevtation.

Although actualy I feel my progress of English since I came here, the result was not comming.

Because I come here and talk with everybody in English, I thought my skill of English was improved naturally.
It was my mistake.
I should study a specific technique for TOEFL either.
It means life is not a box of chocolates.

I still have several chances.
It's good just only to know the way to the location of TOEFL test center.

GO NEXT !!

UGLY

The word, I learned today.

Because I live in Carlsbad now, everyone asks me why do you live so far.
Although there are many reasones, the most important reason is that my host is my friend's tennis student.
My friend is Minako. She and I were same triathlon team mate in Japan.

Now I like living here very much.
My room is wider than Japanese, and our town house has a pool.
Because my Japanese house was located very far from KEIO Univ, it had spent 2 hours and more to go to school on one way.
So I don't think that my house is far from UCSD.
It doesn't matter.

However, I have only one problem about this house.

SNAIL.

DS2019

Because I am a Visiting Scholar of UCSD, I always have to have a passport and the document named DS2019. However, my DS2019 had a mistake of discription about my birth day. Although my birth day is May. 9, it was May 5. in my DS2019. This document is an official document isn't it. And although I had asked to fix it through the International Center two weeks ago, I could obtain it today. It is too late.

At last, I can go to the SSN office. And I can do several proceeding.

By the way, we have the calendar other than A.D. in Japan. The calendar is based on the age of the emperor. When I was born, the age of the emperor was named Showa. And I was born in Showa 55th. Therefore, if my birth day was May. 5, my birth date might become 55,5,5. It is easy to remember.

TOEFL

I reserved TOEFL test today, so I'm going to take the test at Apr. 29th.
TOEFL means the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
This score is an only proof of English skill for foreigners like me.
If you want to be admitted Ph.D. course at UCSD, you are required to take a score more than 213.

Although I have to study hard for TOEFL, this test is quite no fun.
I hate it.
I really hate an English test.

When I was a high school student, I always failed a exam of English class.
So, at that time I never thought that I would study abroad.
However, if I was a good student of English, I would have gone to a school of English literature.
I might be good at Shakespeare instead of Biomedical engineering.
I can't complain.

Because TOEFL test is usually used by admission for a university, the content of the test, especially for Listenning, is dealing about life in campus. Thus, we should also know about the culture of student in U.S.
If the content of TOEFL was mainly about medicine, engineering, and mathematics, I would have been able to take a proper score.
I can't complain.

You can take this test once in a month.
My score is still 193.
There is not much time.
I can't complain.

MRI2

I went to UCSD Medical Center to see a MRI experiment.
It was first time to see MRI practically, because I have never used it.

When I look at the result of MRI in some articles, I would like to claim about spatial or temporal resolution of the measurement. However once I saw the picture, I was simplify surprised. There was sliced Mark.

I was also surprised that UCSD has 3 or 4 MRIs. If you want to publish the article for a famouse Journal, I think you should have to have at least one among the following three. Knowledge, Skill, or Money.
However, I suppose here are all of them.

MRI

I attended a meeting about the measurement of pulmonary blood flow by MRI today.
It was very hard for me.

It is not only that the meeting was very excited by participants in English, so I could not enter the conversation. But also I hardly know about principle of MRI now.
Thus, if the meeting was held in Japanese, it would be also hard for me.

Asian people have a such proverb.
"3 days are enough to change yourself."
I begin to study about MRI.

Greeting behavior

I think people here have a lot of small greeting each other.
And this is still one of my problem.

Because, I'm not used to greet somebody in a short time.
It does not meen that Japanese (and also I) is not friendly.
It just there is no such kind of custum in Japan.

So now I found one good way in front of a cash register in supermarket.
When I'm asked something greeting by somebady, I should answer "Pretty fine" without question.
And also I should say "How are you"without any moment.
So she or he maybe answer "good".
And the whole of greeting will be completed.

Greeting should be done with love.
It is a same principle in all over the world.
However, now I'm going to use this way automatically.

Someday I'd like to answer by other cool way.

Cycling in U.S.

Cycling is easier here than in Japan.
Because it seams cycling is more popular here and line for cyclist is already prepared.
So it is very comfortable, I love to get on a bicycle here.

In a case of Japan, cycling a road bike is not popular in Japan. If you want to get on a road bike, you should fight against huge trafic, emission gas, and narrow lines. It is very dangerous.

However, it does not mean that I hate a Japanese road. The dangerous is sometimes amusing.

I'm often worry about a pack of zebra in savannna. Because they allwasys next to danger of their life. They are aimed by predatory animals like a lion. However, it's not that all zebra is suffering from stomach ulcer. I think zebra also enjoy a thrill.

Well, whatever I'll try to do cycling safety.

Driving a car in U.S.

While I drive a car here, I 'm often asked which country is easier to drive.
I strongly answer for this question.
It is easier to drive here than in Japan.

Because, a lane here is wider and divers are kinder than in Japan. The difference, driving on a opposite lane, is doesn't really matter.

If you have a chance to drive a car in Japan. I'll pray for your safety drive.
There are too many cars. A lane is very narrow. Because almost route depends on an ancient route, it is usually bent and difficult to understand your facing direction. The free way is not free, because you need to purches to get on. Almost trafic signs are written in Chinese character.

Baseball games in a big rival

Recently, I wached a baseball game between UCLA and USC on TV with Darlin at the office of the tennis school of Olimpic Resort.
Darlin is Minako's colleague and her son is a freshman of USC. Darlin was paying attention to a cheering band of USC rather than the baseball team. Because her son is a drams player of the band.
(Her son was not playing on this game becauseon he was not on duty.) Darlin told me an interesting story regarding the relation of both universities. I hear that both universities are big rivals each other because they both are locate in LA, are large universities, and are historical private school. Thus, any kinds of sports games between them are always warm up.
I can find a quite simmilar case in my country, Japan. KEIO university and WASEDA university are big rivals eachi other. Both universities are existing mainly in Tokyo, a capital city of Japan. They both have hurge number of student. And they are also historical private school.
The baseball games, done by each other, are named SO-KEI-SEN and are the most popular in all collage basebale games. (SO means WASEDA univ. and KEI means KEIO univ. Additionaly, SEN means a game.)
I introduce you two talented baseball players come from SO-KEI-SEN.
Yoshinobu Takahashi #24 is a right-fielder of Yomiuri GIANTS, which is a former team of H.Matsui(NY Yankees #55). He can make a hit easily and is also powerful enough to be able hit home run many. So he regeardes as a genius of batting in Japan. Takeshi Wada #21 is a left-hand piching of Softbank HOWKS. He does not throw a ball so fast, but nobady can hit his ball strangely. I heard that it depends on his piching form, but I don't know detail. Y.Takahashi is an alumni of KEIO univ. and T.Wada is WASEDA univ. They contributed to obtain a Bronze of last Athenes Olympic Games very much. Although both players are very popular, their popularity is not only by ther ability of the baseball. Because both are very smalt and good-looking men, they are quite popular in Japanese women. Recentry, many great Japanese baseball players come U.S. Major Baseball Leaguue. Somday you might see the activity of this 2 players comming from SO-KEI-SEN.

In this connection, I (Tatsuya Arai) graduated the same univ. as Y.Takahashi (KEIO univ.). And I am the same age as T.Wada, born in 1980. "Born in 1980" regards as the special age and especially being named MATSUZAKA age in Japan.
Although I would like to pick up about this topic about MATSUZAKA age, however I close now. I will write ablut it later, please wait for me.

The season of SAKURA (cherry blossom)

Now, it is the most beautiful season in Japan. Because the cherry blossoms (SAKURA) are so pretty this time of year. There are many SAKURA trees in Japan. So if you go there in this season, you can find SAKURA everywhere. And you will also be fascinated with the blossom.

We regard SAKURA as the national blossom. We all Why we love SAKURA so much, I think the begining of Apr. as the SAKURA season is a special season for Japanese. Because the entrance ceremony for school and orientation for companies are held in quite same season as SAKURA season. Thus SAKURA blooming reminds us a lot of memories.

In the end of Mar. we eagerly wait for a blooming date of SAKURA. So "the blooming date" is defined strictly. In the case of Tokyo city (the capital city of Japan), it is defined that the date which only 5 or 6 blossom have come in the certain tree is the blooming date. It is only 5 or 6 blossom in thousands of blossom buds.

By the way, do you know the place existing the certain SAKURA tree for the blooming date. It is in a famouse (notorious) shrine, Yasukuni Shrine. It is the shrine that all of war-dead, including Class-A war criminals for world war two, has been honored. Thus, many east Asina country, particularly China and Korea, hate Yasukuni Shrine. The Yasukuni problem too nervous to deal in this essay. I will write about it some day.

Finaly, I let you know the places to enjoy looking Sakura in Tokyo. I recomend the parking space for monks of Zoujou temple. It is not famouse place, because I found there. Zoujou temple is one of the biggest temple in Tokyo, however the parking space for monk's cars is usualy empty. You can enjoy SAKURA there togerther with Tokyo tower, the highest building in Japan (333m).
